Tell us about your business:
I have thrived working in leadership development, coaching and mentoring for thirty six years, coached hundreds of people in all walks of life and almost every market sector: from senior executives to individuals in business, sales teams to working mothers, students to prisoners. I am committed to supporting individuals to design the lives they want to lead, deal with barriers that may get in the way and give them the tools that will help them in their quest. I founded Four by Four Consulting Ltd in 1989. I co-authored Making Management Simple published by How To Books. Currently, I am writing a trilogy of thrillers inspired by four years spent working on an oil pipeline in Russia.
The beginning - your ‘eureka’ moment:
I lifted the lid of the dustbin and looked at the world through new eyes.
The best and the worst of times:
It's all a matter of choice
What gets you out of bed in the morning - what motivates you?:
My commitment to make a difference at least to one person per day and on occasion, that person turns out to be me.
Luck or skill - what gets your further?:
Oh both, without doubt. I’m an opportunist and I enjoy a challenge, so I make my own luck a lot of the time. I have honed my skills over the past 36 years, but that’s not to say there isn’t a whole lot more that I want to learn.
A nettle grasper!
Moving on up - your ambitions and the next big thing:
To grow a healthy business built on the use of a new transformational profiling tool from Harrison Assessments. It facilitates in-depth coaching and leadership development in a gentle and accessible manner. It is an incredibly flexible tool that can be applied in a variety of ways to achieve a whole raft of results. I am mad about it! I have a series of personal development books to write as well as the trilogy of thrillers. I dearly wish and am committed to seeing the end of hunger and poverty in the world during my lifetime. To that end I invest in and volunteer with The Hunger Project (www.thp.org), a global charity whose purpose is to end world hunger, principally through the empowerment of women at the grass roots levels in poor and hungry communities.
Your top tips:
Listen, listen, listen.
What others say about you and your business:
They say that I am an excellent listener who has the ability to help people get to the crux of the matter very quickly and then provide workable solutions. People say that they trust me, that I am calm and that I bring humour to my work. They also say that they achieve goals they didn’t expect to. Having had 36 years in business and worked in almost every market sector, people appreciate the breadth of my experience and acquired wisdom. And my enthusiasm is infectious!
I have known Helen for approximately three years. We met shortly after the appointment of our Chief Executive. Helen helped our firm to develop strategically over a period of two years. With Helen’s help we have been able to determine a new management structure, its composition, roles and responsibilities, and designed a programme specifically to develop its members to fulfil their new management roles. No other consultant has achieved the same effects and outcomes that have been evident in our new management skills, competencies and capabilities. Without Helen’s assistance, guidance and support in recent years, I do not feel that we would be in the position we find ourselves today. Also, I have been coached myself by Helen and she has helped me achieve a goal that I thought would always be ‘pie in the sky’. Ms JA, HR Director
