Tell us about your business:
Bailey Solutions offers library system software to help organisations of all sizes manage their library and information centres. Bailey Solutions also offers enquiry management software to help organisations of all sizes manage their enquiries. Our enquiry tracking software is the product of choice for legal and professional firms, workplace libraries, governments, charities, institutes, associations, colleges, as well as research and specialist libraries around the world. Enquire is suitable for libraries, press office, public enquiry points, freedom of information points - in fact anywhere where you handle enquiries on a regular basis.
The beginning - your ‘eureka’ moment:
I was working as a freelance programmer writing databases and applications for small businesses. This was hard work writing code once and negotiations prices for projects that we moveable beasts. I had had a previous career as a librarian and had written my own library management system. I realised one day that I could sell that code as a product to many customers.
The best and the worst of times:
Best: being able to create jobs for myself and other people. Worst: The recession hitting us in 2009 and having to de-create jobs - we have since recovered.
What gets you out of bed in the morning - what motivates you?:
I am very lucky that I wake up 'ready to go'. I am just full of ideas that I want to put into action but I have to be quite selective about the ones I go forward with. I like helping people do their jobs better using technology - there's always something new coming along, so it's very interesting.
Luck or skill - what gets your further?:
I'd say the skill in responding to what's going on around you to take advantage of the opportunities that come along and skirt round any obstacles. You can never be complacent or think that you have worked it out and that's it.
As entrepreneur is someone who can see opportunities and turn them into a way of creating jobs and income for themselves and others.
Moving on up - your ambitions and the next big thing:
Global domination! No seriously, we have recently launched our new enquiry tracking product and we'd like to take this product into new markets and new territories. Grow our turnover and profit. We have switched to the Software as Service Subscription (SOAS) model and are improving our recurring income.
Your top tips:
1. Make sure you charge enough - a mistake I made in my early days - and don't be apologetic about it. 2. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do something if you think you can – find your own way around any obstacles. 3. It's good to be optimistic but recognise when something or someone hasn't worked out and pull the plug quickly. The sooner you do it the better.
