Innovation has to be one of the most over-used buzzwords bandied around the business world.

You don’t need to look any further than the news channels recounting the global economic crisis, to find out that businesses and organisations of all sizes and sectors need to embrace innovation in order to become more sustainable and prosperous.  But what exactly is innovation and how can businesses innovate?  Only once we know what “innovation” really means, can we then start to explore ways in which our businesses can become more innovative.

In search of a friendly-sounding definition for innovation, you may have come across the following on one well-known online dictionary:

Innovation: “The action or process of innovating; Innovation is crucial to the continuing success of any organisation”.

I would have thought that this is when you may start to panic!  Not only does it fail to enlighten you on the meaning of innovation (by telling you that “innovation is the action or process of innovating”), but it also tells you that it is “crucial to the continuing success” of your organisation!
